The main purpose of the Section “Recent Advances in Numerical Methods and Simulations in Statics and Dynamics of Structures” is the presentation of new methods to analyse of safety and reliability of the structures under extreme loads as the earthquake and climatic loads (temperature, wind, snow, rain and others), terroristic attack (aircraft, missile, blast, fire and others) or technology accident (explosion, high temperature and others). The nonlinear material and geometric behaviour of structures is necessary consider during extreme loads. The risk the structure collapse is determined by the model and resistance uncertainties. The deterministic and probabilistic analysis of the structure failure during the extreme loading can be used. The probabilistic assessment gives us the most complex analysis of the acceptable level of risk. Recently, the theories of probability and statistics and reliability have provided the bases for modern structural design codes and specifications.

The main objectives of the Mini-symposium are developing:

  • The advanced methods and simulations of structure failure under extreme loads,
  • The nonlinear material and geometric  model of structures and the effective numerical methods,
  • The advances in the soil-base-structure or soil-fluid-structure interaction analysis under seismic loads,
  • The experimental tests and the fluid simulation of the blast or extreme wind impact on  structures with various shape,
  • The optimisation of  the new composite materials or structure shape to have the higher safety of the structure under impact of extreme loads,
  • The simulation probabilistic methods and the stochastic finite elements to probabilistic analysis of the structure resistance due to extreme loads,
  • The risk analysis of the structure failure using the fragility curves of the structural elements for various type of accident or extreme loads,
  • The Reliability-Based Optimization procedures to consider of the effects of uncertainty by means of reliability, the applications involving optimal structural design for stochastic linear and nonlinear statics and dynamics.

The experience from the experiment tests, modelling and simulations of the structure failure under extreme loads using the deterministic or probabilistic assessment are welcome.

Since the origin of Hydrological sciences the connection between natural phenomena and mathematical formulation of solutions has been clearly identified as a main topic. Reliability and simplicity are thus two of the most important words for people who are involved in such researches, and the main objectives for operators in this field.
Every aspect of hydrological sciences can be improved by Mathematical Modelling, from comprehension and modelling of extreme events (for both wet and dry periods), to management of water systems (natural or artificial), until the source of many uncertainty for this kind of problems: the meteorological field.
Data collection and computation still remain of great importance, from the measurement of hydro-meteorological variables to the analysis of big datasets and historical series. Efforts in such direction are also the ones  oriented in regionalization, spatial distribution and extension of prediction to ungauged sites.

Topics of interest of the symposium include:
 (i) catchment hydrology, (ii) hydrological forecasting, (iii) water management, (iv) operations and control, (v) remote sensing and data assimilation, (vi) precipitation and climate.

Many physical phenomena in science and engineering are modelled by nonlinear differential equations. There is no doubt that Lie symmetry methods are one of the most effective set of techniques to find exact solutions of such nonlinear differential equations. They have been used by several scientists and applied to various nonlinear models in physics, biology, engineering, economics, etc.

The Lie symmetry methodsidentify and extend the concept of symmetry, produce an effective method of symmetry applications in difficult situations, giveaccurate statement of problems and in many cases show a possible way for finding their solutions.

The aim of this mini-symposium is to emphasize the applications of Lie symmetry methods to search for exact solutions of nonlinear models and to show recent progress of theoretic tools in Lie symmetry methods related to the study of nonlinear differential equations.

Organizer: Prof. Oldrich Zmeskal, Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Chemistry, Purkynova 118, CZ‐612 00 Brno, Czech Republic

E-mail: zmeskal@fch.vutbr.cz

Transport and accumulation of heat, moisture, chemical substances, and momentum are phenomena which affect the building materials and structures over their whole lifetime period. Their satisfactory description requires primarily a choice of proper physical and mathematical models because the transport mechanisms are coupled.  The computational implementation of mathematical models is another essential factor involving an application of appropriate methods of numerical solution. The computer simulation tools cannot be utilized properly without knowledge of a variety of transport and storage material parameters, which have to be determined experimentally in a wide range of field quantities, such as temperature, moisture content, and concentration of a particular chemical compound. The applied models are also supposed to be verified using critical experiments, in order to assess their overall quality.

Therefore, in practical applications the computational modeling and experimental assessment of transport processes cannot be separated without a risk of significant departure from the physical reality.

The symposium brings together physicists, chemists, mathematicians, and engineers working in the field of transport processes in building materials. The main topics include but are not limited to:

The purpose of this mini-symposium is to bring together applied mathematicians, physicist, engineers and numerical annalists which are interested in practical & theoretical problems related to orthotropic geometrical shapes. 3D orthotropic shapes posses at least three planes of symmetry whose normal are linearly independent.

The perfectly symmetric sphere is the simplest example but very common are other shapes (bounded curvature), such as prolate/oblate spheroids and tri-axial ellipsoids.

Typical problems involving such shapes are often governed by the Laplace, Poisson, Helmholtz or the Biharmonic (elliptic type PDE'S) field equations and are subject to a Neumann, Dirichlet or Robin b.c. They naturally arise in many branches of mathematical physics, such as, electromagnetism, optics & bio-medical imaging, fluid & solid mechanics, acoustics etc. and quite often involve normal Eigen-solutions in terms of Legendre', spheroidal- wave or Lame' functions. The state of the art on Ellipsoidal Harmonics is given in a recent monograph (Cambridge Univ. Press) authored by GD and a numerical code for computing Lame' functions of any order & degree has been just developed by IC.

Interdisciplinarity aims at obtaining the new by crossing boundaries between academic disciplines, and thinking across them.

Computer aided medical planning and simulation is a rapidly evolving research field that is going to alter dramatically the way practitioners perform their job. Mathematical models and computer simulations have a huge impact on modern medicine and engineering, in the treatment of diseases, in modeling engineering processes and prototypes and financial planning processes. For instance, a challenge lies in the modeling of the behavior of hard and soft tissue bringing together researchers from mathematics, medicine, economics, computer science and engineering. Another type of challenge could consist in data processing as subject to very general topics, including signal processing, field image or volume, with many applications in industry and medicine. Last but not least, modern medicine and state of the art engineering implies best "treatment" with cost effective optimization.
It should be emphasized that it is not expected the mathematician to become a physician or an engineer but to acquire interdisciplinary concepts and gain the ability to use and value modern methods across domains.

Besides talks of mathematicians, doctors and engineers, the master students, PhD students, post-doc students or junior researchers will have the opportunity to present their works.

Water entry problems are of major interest for several elds of engineering applications, ranging from cargo ship to space capsule design, [1]. In recent years, the study of  uid-structure interaction has been the object of remarkable eorts both on the numerical and experimental sides, [11, 6, 12, 9, 10].

The large part of the experimental works focuses on the water entry of rigid bodies. Minor eorts have been devoted to  exible bodies, [20, 14, 25, 23, 24]. The majority of the experimental apparatus allow for pure vertical velocity. Very few experimental eorts have been instead dedicated to asymmetric impacts. An experimental apparatus for asymmetric free-fall water entry of rigid wedges has been presented in [15], while in [13] the authors studied oblique impact of plates at small deadrise angles. Experiments on mid-size rigid wedges entering the water in free fall have been performed by [32]. Therein, the rigid motion is captured through a cable position sensor. In [7], accelerometers to sense the impact dynamics were utilized. In the majority of experimental works, local pressure measurements are performed utilizing standard pressure sensors [32, 7, 26, 4, 3, 30, 2], which provide only local information for pressure evaluation. Recently, a methodology to reconstruct the distributed pressure eld over the whole structure through particle image velocimetry (PIV) has been presented in [14, 21, 27].

From a numerical point of view, 2D potential  flow solutions have been proposed to elucidate the hydrodynamics in water entry problems. Starting from the seminal work by Wagner on the water entry of solid bodies with low deadrise angle [31], signicant progress has been made in the dissection of the role of large deadrise angles [17, 19] and geometric asymmetries [15, 18, 28], among the others, including hydroelastic phenomena [16, 22, 29], as well. Recently, the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) has been applied to water-entry problems, providing an ecient and reliable alternative to traditional analytical and numerical methods, [33, 5]. All these efforts have contributed to deepening on the complex aspects of water impact, identifying the key geometric and physical factors that lay at the basis the unsteady  fluid-structure interaction.

In recent years, the progress in computational resources has made it possible both the extension to 3D of numerical investigation, [8], opening the path towards the optimization of real-scale vessels and fuselages.

In this Symposium, we will assess the most recent advances in the dissection of hull slamming and water-entry problems, both from a numerical and an experimental point of view, providing a valuable reference for future studies on the subject.

88) Title: Dynamical Systems and their Applications to Advanced Materials, Structures and Technologies

Organizer: Prof. Jiří Vala, Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Veveří 95, CZ‐602 00 Brno, Czech Republic

E-mail: vala.j@fce.vutbr.cz

The theoretical, numerical and computational analysis of dynamical systems and their  applications to the analysis of problems coming from civil, mechanical, electrical, etc. engineering and related subject fields, their formal verification and practical validation of relevant approaches constitute the unifying idea of this symposium, whose significance should be seen just in the confrontation of different approaches and intensification of multidisciplinary cooperation of experts (mathematicians, physicists, engineers, ...).

Leaving nice model cases and seeing the real-world problems, we come to serious difficulties a) in the formal analysis of existence, uniqueness, stability, etc. of solutions, b) in the convergence of sequences of approximate solutions, as well as c) in the design of sufficiently robust and inexpensive algorithms for direct, sensitivity and inverse problems.

The unification approaches addressed to the continuous and discrete analysis, namely to the study of integral, differential, difference, etc. equations from engineering practice, both deterministic and stochastic ones, including their formulation on time scales, is needed: the theoretical problems include e.g. i) stability and observability of dynamical systems on time scales, their qualitative and quantitative analysis, ii) filtration of inner states of such systems and iii) identification of systems of orthogonal functions.

The scope of applications is not limited, but both theoretical and computational predictions of mechanical, thermal, etc. behaviour of advanced materials and structures and control of related technologies, up to the development of modelling and simulation software tools, are welcome.

95) Title:  Open Challenges in Seismic Design of New Structures and Vulnerability Reduction of Existing Buildings

Organizers: Gabriele MILANI, Technical University of Milan, Piazza Leonardo da Vinci 32, Milan, Antonio FORMISANO, University of Naples Federico II, Piazzale Tecchio 80, Naples and Francesco FABBROCINO, Università telematica Pegaso, Piazza Trieste e Trento, Naples

E-mail: gabriele.milani@polimi.it; francesco.fabbrocino@unipegaso.it; antonio.formisano@unina.it

Experience of past earthquakes has demonstrated that many common buildings and typical methods of construction usually lack basic resistance against earthquake actions. Open challenges to tackle a consistent seismic design are more profoundly faced by developing countries, where the inadequacy and poor access to advanced technologies, resources and knowledge lead to build new structures still vulnerable under horizontal loads. Conversely, open issues in industrialized countries like USA, EU and Japan are still the mitigation of the seismic vulnerability of the existing/historical built stock, almost always constituted by non-ductile materials and conceived to withstand only vertical loads. The special issue aims at comprehensively collecting papers dealing with the important issues related to the correct design of new structures and the vulnerability reduction of existing buildings in earthquake prone areas.

Contributions on structures made by both traditional (steel, R.C., masonry and wood) and innovative (e.g. FRP, composite materials, structural glass and aluminium alloys) materials are welcome, as well as detailed analyses on topics regarding strengthening of existing structures, seismic isolation and dissipation systems.

Experimental and numerical works, as well as emblematic case studies and critical discussions on existing design approaches, are finally encouraged.
