18) Title: Numerical Methods for Solving Boundary Value Problems with Application to Science and Engineering

Organizer: Dr. Manoj Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology Allahabad-India

E-mail: manoj@mnnit.ac.in

Many problems in science and engineering are reduced to a set of boundary value problems through a process of mathematical modeling such as problems in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics etc. Sometimes it is possible to find an exact solution of a boundary value problem as a combination of elementary functions or as a trigonometric functions or power series. However, this classical mathematical approach for solving boundary value problems only works on a relatively small class of problems. In more realistic models, solutions of boundary value problems cannot be found explicitly in terms of known functions, and the alternative is to determine an approximate solution for given data through numerical computations. Due to this reason, different numerical methods have been developed in the literature for the solution of boundary value problems that includes Finite difference method, Finite element method, Finite volume method, Boundary element method and Spline methods etc. This mini-symposium aims, to present the new development of computational methods for solving boundary value problems.

Organizer: Prof. Oldrich Zmeskal, Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Chemistry, Purkynova 118, CZ‐612 00 Brno, Czech Republic

E-mail: zmeskal@fch.vutbr.cz

Transport and accumulation of heat, moisture, chemical substances, and momentum are phenomena which affect the building materials and structures over their whole lifetime period. Their satisfactory description requires primarily a choice of proper physical and mathematical models because the transport mechanisms are coupled.  The computational implementation of mathematical models is another essential factor involving an application of appropriate methods of numerical solution. The computer simulation tools cannot be utilized properly without knowledge of a variety of transport and storage material parameters, which have to be determined experimentally in a wide range of field quantities, such as temperature, moisture content, and concentration of a particular chemical compound. The applied models are also supposed to be verified using critical experiments, in order to assess their overall quality.

Therefore, in practical applications the computational modeling and experimental assessment of transport processes cannot be separated without a risk of significant departure from the physical reality.

Many problems have their mathematical representation in terms of   integral equations or they includes random factors. The modeling of these systems by integral and integro-differential  and stochastic integral equations usually requires that the parameters involved not be completely known. Such models often originate from problems in physics or economics where we have insufficient information on parameter values. A common way of dealing with this situation has been to replace the true values of these parameters by some kind of numerical methods and hope that the corresponding system will give a good approximation to the original one. Also, since some when obtaining of exact solution of these equations are impossible, numerical methods are used to obtain approximate solutions.

In this Symposium we present improved numerical methods for the approximation of these equations that has become a field of increasing interest.

The fractional variational problems (FVPs) is a new interesting area in optimization problems. FVPs is a problem in which either the objective functional or the constraints, or both, contain at least one fractional derivative term. A FVPs can be defined with respect to different definitions of fractional derivatives but the most important types are Riemann-Liouville, Caputo and Rieaz-Caputo derivatives.

So far, many researchers have studied the fractional variational problems and discussed the different types of problems. To obtain the necessary optimality conditions for FVPs is a one of the topics that interested for researchers.

Differential equations play an important role in several mathematical models that describe many phenomena in natural sciences, such as physics, biology, engineering,  and economics.  However, it is difficult to get exact solutions of the problems that the real life offers for these models.

Several scientists consider the group method approach a milestone in the search for solutions of nonlinear differential equations. In fact, although this approach is not always able to characterize the whole set of solutions, it allows one to get wide classes of exact solutions in a methodological way. Moreover the knowledge of symmetries admitted by an equation does not bring only to a reduction of independent variable but allows us to get conservation laws or to first integrals.

In the last few decades, a large amount of publications in theoretical and applied mathematics are devoted to the group methods and their generalizations.

The Lie group method specifies and extends the concept of symmetry, yields the effective methods of symmetry applications in complicated situations, gives correct statement of problems and in many cases indicates the possible way of their solutions.

The aim of this minisymposium is to focus the attention of scientists in symmetry methods to the search for exact solutions of nonlinear models in physics, in engineering science, and in biology as well as to show recent developments of the theoretical tools of the group methods  applicable to the study of differential equations.

Computer modelling in applied quantum engineering is one of the most important keys in further progressing of material science and quantum electronics. In spite of essential achievements in theoretical quantum mechanics, the applied problems of practical electronics are less paid attention due to the increased complexity of phenomena arisen in electronic components that can be modelled only in a certain way using powerful supercomputers. Then, for practicing design and simulation engineers, the simplified analytical and numerical, including semi-classical models are needed that can be integrated with the contemporary electronic circuit design automation (EDA) tools and which are able to be improved or adapted to the concrete manufacturing technologies using the empirical or semi-empirical methods.

The proposed mini-Symposium is aimed to the researchers and engineers who are interested in the development and exploitation of the methods, algorithms and models applicable in practical quantum mechanics and nanoelectronics, but the contributions from broader area are considerable. For instance, the programming aspects of new design tools are in the field of this proposed mini-Symposium. Any abstracts on the experimental verifications of numerical models are in the priority list of this meeting. Completely theoretical contributions, which are prospective for practical simulations in the future, are highly welcome, as well.

Interdisciplinarity aims at obtaining the new by crossing boundaries between academic disciplines, and thinking across them.

Computer aided medical planning and simulation is a rapidly evolving research field that is going to alter dramatically the way practitioners perform their job. Mathematical models and computer simulations have a huge impact on modern medicine and engineering, in the treatment of diseases, in modeling engineering processes and prototypes and financial planning processes. For instance, a challenge lies in the modeling of the behavior of hard and soft tissue bringing together researchers from mathematics, medicine, economics, computer science and engineering. Another type of challenge could consist in data processing as subject to very general topics, including signal processing, field image or volume, with many applications in industry and medicine. Last but not least, modern medicine and state of the art engineering implies best "treatment" with cost effective optimization.

It should be emphasized that it is not expected the mathematician to become a physician or an engineer but to acquire interdisciplinary concepts and gain the ability to use and value modern methods across domains.

E-mail: gabriele.milani@polimi.it

Experience of past earthquakes has demonstrated that many common buildings and typical methods of construction usually lack basic resistance against earthquake actions. Open challenges to tackle a consistent seismic design are more profoundly faced by developing countries, were the inadequacy and poor access to advanced technologies, resources and knowledge lead to build new structures still vulnerable for horizontal loads. Conversely, open issues in industrialized countries like USA, EU and Japan are still the mitigation of the seismic vulnerability of the existing/historical built stock, almost always constituted by non-ductile materials and conceived to withstand only vertical loads. The MS aims at comprehensively collecting papers dealing with the important issues related to the correct design of new structures and the vulnerability reduction of existing buildings in earthquake prone areas.

Contributions on structures made by both traditional (steel, R.C., masonry and wood) and innovative (e.g. FRP) materials are encouraged, as well as detailed analyses on topics regarding strengthening of existing structures, seismic isolation and dissipation systems.

Experimental and numerical studies, as well as emblematic case studies and critical discussions on existing standardized methods are very welcome.

87) Title: Dynamical Systems and their Applications to Advanced Materials, Structures and Technologies

Organizer: Prof. Jiri Vala, Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Veveri 95, CZ‐602 00 Brno, Czech Republic

E-mail: vala.j@fce.vutbr.cz

The theoretical, numerical and computational analysis of dynamical systems and their  applications to the analysis of problems coming from civil, mechanical, electrical, etc. engineering and related subject fields, their formal verification and practical validation of relevant approaches constitute the unifying idea of this symposium, whose significance should be seen just in the confrontation of different approaches and intensification of multidisciplinary cooperation of experts (mathematicians, physicists, engineers, ...). Leaving nice model cases and seeing the real-world problems, we come to serious difficulties a) in the formal analysis of existence, uniqueness, stability, etc. of solutions, b) in the convergence of sequences of approximate solutions, as well as c) in the design of sufficiently robust and inexpensive algorithms for direct, sensitivity and inverse problems.

The unification approaches addressed to the continuous and discrete analysis, namely to the study of integral, differential, difference, etc. equations from engineering practice, both deterministic and stochastic ones, including their formulation on time scales, is needed: the theoretical problems include e.g. i) stability and observability of dynamical systems on time scales, their qualitative and quantitative analysis, ii) filtration of inner states of such systems and iii) identification of systems of orthogonal functions. The scope of applications is not limited, but both theoretical and computational predictions of mechanical, thermal, etc. behaviour of advanced materials and structures and control of related technologies, up to the development of modelling and simulation software tools, are welcome.

The Minisymposium deals with Variational Analysis and Equilibrium Problems, especially those related to network design, as traffic equilibrium problem, oligopolistic market equilibrium problem, space market equilibrium problem, financial problem, vaccination problem, Walras equilibrium problem both in the static and dynamic case.
Variational Analysis encompasses a large area of modern mathematics, including the classic Calculus of Variations, the Theories of Perturbation and of Approximation, Subgradient, Subderivatives, Set Convergence and Variational Inequalities. Variational Inequalities, as a particular and important chapter of Variational Analysis, have undergone great development and influence both in the progress of Variational Analysis, and in applications to Mathematical Physics and, more recently, to Engineering, Statistics, Economics, Financial Networks and Generalized Complementarity Problems. Several classical and new theories, such as those of Evolutionary Projected Dynamical Systems and Infinite Dimensional Duality, as well as research in discretized computational methods, have received a decisive impulse in order to offer effective solutions to hitherto unsolved problems. For this reason, particular emphasis will be given to the development of the Variational Inequalities Theory as for example the research of regularity results and their use to the computational procedure.
Therefore, the Minisymposium aims to offer a review of research themes, methods and open problems together with outlines of the new research trends in all the above topics.

Specifically, topics of interest include, but not limited to:

  • Infinite-Dimensional Variational Problems

The term of “Process Intensification” in Chemical Engineering was introduced during the 1970s when the ICI invented the HiGee rapid rotating mass transfer device even though that the reactive distillation was previously used. Until the early 1990s, Process Intensification focused on primarily four areas; the use of centrifugal forces, compact heat transfer, intensive mixing, and combined technologies. Since 2000s the growth of Process Intensification is accelerating as many research centers in different countries had entered the field, international conferences and smaller symposia on process intensification have been organized.

Process Intensification is gaining much attention as one of the key objectives in designing new plants and retrofitting existing units. Several drivers have contributed to this increasing attention. For instance, enhanced process safety and homeland security are tied to process intensification, as the inventory and flows of hazardous substances are lowered, the process risk is typically reduced (notice that the storage of large amounts of very toxic compounds may produce very dangerous accidents and the number of process units is related to the possibility to have dangerous accidents that may involve the dead of many people). Additionally, conservation of natural resources (including better utilization of mass and energy) may be linked to Process Intensification. Given the complexity of a typical process and the various objectives, it is important to develop an effective framework for generating and pursuing valid opportunities for Process Intensification.

While cost reduction was the main motivation for Process Intensification, it quickly became apparent that there are other important potential benefits, particularly in respect of improved intrinsic safety.

The optimal design of process intensified systems in chemical engineering is a non-linear and multivariable problem, and the objective function used as optimization criterion is generally non-convex with several local optimums. However, the task is complicated and is likely to fail to achieve convergence. Recent years have seen increased development and application of global optimization strategies in many areas of Process Intensification in chemical engineering.
