Description
--------------------
Standard computational methods across many application fields require tessellation in 2D or 3D using triangular or tetrahedral meshes. Tessellation itself is computationally expensive especially in higher dimensions, the result of computation is again discrete, and physical phenomena are not smoothly interpolated. Meshfree methods are scalable for higher dimensions and offer smooth final representation. Meshfree methods lead to a solution of system of linear equations, in general.

Meshfree approach is a hot topic in physical sciences and numerical mathematics

The workshop is intended to exploration of theoretical foundations and applicability of Meshfree methods especially based on Radial Basis Functions methods

Main topics (but not limited to):

  • Meshfree methods in engineering problems

The main purpose of the Section “Recent Advances in Numerical Methods and Simulations in Statics and Dynamics of Structures” is the presentation of new methods to analyse of safety and reliability of the structures under extreme loads as the earthquake and climatic loads (temperature, wind, snow, rain and others), terroristic attack (aircraft, missile, blast, fire and others) or technology accident (explosion, high temperature and others). The nonlinear material and geometric behaviour of structures is necessary consider during extreme loads. The risk the structure collapse is determined by the model and resistance uncertainties. The deterministic and probabilistic analysis of the structure failure during the extreme loading can be used. The probabilistic assessment gives us the most complex analysis of the acceptable level of risk. Recently, the theories of probability and statistics and reliability have provided the bases for modern structural design codes and specifications.

The main objectives of the Mini-symposium are developing:

  • The advanced methods and simulations of structure failure under extreme loads,
  • The nonlinear material and geometric  model of structures and the effective numerical methods,
  • The advances in the soil-base-structure or soil-fluid-structure interaction analysis under seismic loads,
  • The experimental tests and the fluid simulation of the blast or extreme wind impact on  structures with various shape,
  • The optimisation of  the new composite materials or structure shape to have the higher safety of the structure under impact of extreme loads,
  • The simulation probabilistic methods and the stochastic finite elements to probabilistic analysis of the structure resistance due to extreme loads,
  • The risk analysis of the structure failure using the fragility curves of the structural elements for various type of accident or extreme loads,
  • The Reliability-Based Optimization procedures to consider of the effects of uncertainty by means of reliability, the applications involving optimal structural design for stochastic linear and nonlinear statics and dynamics.
  • The experience from the experiment tests, modelling and simulations of the structure failure under extreme loads using the deterministic or probabilistic assessment are welcome.

22) Title: Numerical Methods for Solving differential equations with Application to Science and Engineering

Organizer: Dr. Manoj Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology Allahabad-India

E-mail: manoj@mnnit.ac.in

Many problems in science and engineering are reduced to a set of boundary value problems through a process of mathematical modeling such as problems in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics etc. Sometimes it is possible to find an exact solution of a boundary value problem as a combination of elementary functions or as a trigonometric functions or power series.

However, this classical mathematical approach for solving boundary value problems only works on a relatively small class of problems. In more realistic models, solutions of boundary value problems cannot be found explicitly in terms of known functions, and the alternative is to determine an approximate solution for given data through numerical computations.

Due to this reason, different numerical methods have been developed in the literature for the solution of boundary value problems that includes Finite difference method, Finite element method, Finite volume method, Boundary element method and Spline methods etc. This mini-symposium aims, to present the new development of computational methods for solving boundary value problems.

35) Title: Compatible Mathematical and Laboratory Modelling of Fluid Flows

Organizer: Yuli D. Chashechkin, Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Ishlinsky Institute for Problems in Mechanics

E-mail: yulidch@gmail.com

The potential of mathematical investigations of fluid flows, which began to develop from the middle of the 18th century, gradually become comparable with the resources of physical laboratory modeling. Particularly rapid progress in the development of both analytical and numerical methods and results, observed in the last quarter of the 20th century, is associated with the development of computers and computing technologies. At the same time, information technologies help to improve experimental techniques, and made it possible to identify the fine structures of many types of flows.

The study of multiscale structures helps to understand mechanisms of basic physical states of natural systems formation and identify basic processes causing their changes. Mathematics of flow structures helps to estimate their influence on the transport of energy and matter, to improve the prediction of the evolution of separate processes and natural systems like as atmosphere and hydrosphere in general, to calculate the interaction of liquids and solids, to develop methods of processes control in complex systems. Nevertheless new robust experimental data are still the most important for development of fluid flows model.

The goal of this mini-symposium is to discuss different analytical and numerical methods for the coordinated calculation of the dynamics and multiscale structure of heterogeneous fluid flows, to compare the principles of structural components identification and classification of structural forms, to estimate methods of comparisons the results of different models with each other, with observations of natural systems and data of laboratory modelling.

Applied mathematics covers a wide range of topics in mathematics itself and all other natural sciences and engineering. Biology studies life in its variety and complexity. It describes how organisms go about getting food, communicating, sensing the environment, and reproducing. On the other hand, physics looks for mathematical laws of nature and makes detailed predictions about the forces that derive idealized systems. Spanning the distance between the complexity of life and the simplicity of physical laws is the challenge of biophysics. Looking for patterns in life and analyzing them with mathematics and physics is powerful way to gain insights. As innovations come out of physics and biology labs, biophysicists find new areas to explore where they can apply their expertise, create new tools, and learn new things. The work always aim to find out how biological systems work. Engineering is concerned with the application of scientific and mathematics to design and analyze, to manufacture objects and structures to impove human conditions. Bioengineers use the same concepts of science and mathematics to understand to performance of living organisms in normal and abnormal situations then design structures and objects to enhance the performance of the human body. It is engineering applied to human health. There is therefore an interdisciplinary need to unite scientists from Applied Mathematics, Life Sciences, Chemistry , Physics and Engineering to come together to share, explore and unite their scientific findings so as to provide solutions to questions concerning the Human Health Sciences.

In this direction, we cordially invite contributors to stimulate the continuing efforts to solve real-world biomedical problems with advanced theories and technologies of applied mathematics as well as provide a good opportunity for researchers in applied mathematics, biomedical sciences, and biomedical engineering fields to discuss the current state of the art of knowledge of this emerging interdisciplinary research field. Organizer: Prof. OldrichZmeskal, Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Chemistry, Purkynova 118, CZ‐612 00 Brno, Czech Republic

E-mail: zmeskal@fch.vutbr.cz

Transport and accumulation of heat, moisture, chemical substances, and momentum are phenomena which affect buildings and their inbuilt materials over their whole lifetime period. Their satisfactory description requires primarily a choice of proper physical and mathematical models because the transport mechanisms are coupled.  The computational implementation of mathematical models is another essential factor involving an application of appropriate methods of numerical solution. The computer simulation tools cannot be utilized properly without knowledge of a variety of transport and storage material parameters, which have to be determined experimentally in a wide range of field quantities, such as temperature, moisture content, and concentration of a particular chemical compound. The applied models are also supposed to be verified using critical experiments, in order to assess their overall quality. Therefore, in practical applications the computational modeling and experimental assessment of transport processes cannot be separated without a risk of significant departure from the physical reality.

Many physical phenomena in science and engineering are modelled by nonlinear differential equations. There is no doubt that Lie symmetry methods are one of the most effective set of techniques to find exact solutions of such nonlinear differential equations. They have been used by several scientists and applied to various nonlinear models in physics, biology, engineering, economics, etc.

The Lie symmetry methods identify and extend the concept of symmetry, produce an effective method of symmetry applications in difficult situations, give an accurate statement of problems and in many cases show a possible way for finding their solutions.

The aim of this mini-symposium is to emphasize the applications of Lie symmetry methods to search for exact solutions of nonlinear models and to show recent  progress of theoretic tools in Lie symmetry methods related to the study of nonlinear differential equations.

67) Title: Modelling of Hydrodynamic and Morphodynamic Processes in Estuaries and Coastal Zones

Organizer: José S. Antunes do Carmo, Associate Professor, University of Coimbra, Department of Civil Engineering, 3030-788 Coimbra, Portugal

E-mail: jsacarmo@dec.uc.pt

Knowledge of the flow characteristics associated with surface waves, tides and currents, and their dependency on the bathymetry and coastal geometry, is of considerable importance when designing structures commonly found in the fluvial and coastal environment, like bridges, groins and breakwaters. Such knowledge also helps to predict the modifications thereby introduced into sea disturbance and into the transport and deposition of sediments. Energy for these nearshore processes comes from the wind blowing over the sea surface, gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun and by possible impulsive disturbances at the atmospheric and land boundaries. Although the nearshore zone is usually considered from the storm-influenced landward limit seawards to shoaling-inducing depths, coastal landslides, estuarine circulation and river plumes can significantly affect the nearshore circulation.

At the end of the 1970s linear models were used to simulate the refraction effect produced by the depth variation along the direction of the wave crest propagation and the diffraction effect produced by the gradient of the amplitude along the wave crest. However, as these models are based on the linear theory, they should not be used in shallow water conditions. A number of factors allowed the use of increasingly complex mathematical models. Not only has our theoretical knowledge of the phenomena involved greatly improved, but numerical methods have been used more efficiently. The great strides made in computer technology, especially since the 1980s, improving information processing and enabling vast amounts of data to be stored, have meant that more mathematical models, of greater complexity, can be used, with fewer restrictions.

At that time, in the 1980s, the Saint-Venant equations were frequently used in practical applications of tidal circulation in estuaries and enclosed seas. However, as has been widely demonstrated, in shallow water conditions and for wind-generated waves, models based on a non-dispersive theory, of which the Saint-Venant model is an example, are limited and are not usually able to compute satisfactory results over long periods of analysis.
It is generally accepted that for practical applications the combined gravity wave effects in shallow water conditions must be taken into account. In addition, the refraction and diffraction processes, the swelling, reflection and breaking waves, plus the wave-wave and wave-current interactions, and the phenomena resulting from important sudden time-bed-level changes, all have to be considered, too.

Therefore, only wave models of order σ, where σ = h/λ, or greater, of the Boussinesq or Serre types are able to reproduce effects other than the dispersive effects, including nonlinearities resulting from wave-wave and wave-current interactions. Waves resulting from sudden time-bed-level changes that cause tsunamis, submerged landslides in reservoirs or landslides on reservoir banks are examples of such changes.

To describe the strongly nonlinear dynamics of waves propagating from deep waters, through intermediate waters, and final stages of shoaling and surf zones, fully nonlinear models are required. The ability of Boussinesq-type models and Serre (or Green and Naghdi) equations to reproduce these nonlinear processes in shallow water conditions is well known. However, these models are weakly-dispersive and restricted to these conditions. The addition of other terms of dispersive origin has been recently considered.

Offshore to nearshore wind-wave generation propagation and transformation is already operationally obtained by means of third generation spectral wave models (e.g. SWAN). Concerning ocean and nearshore circulation, operational models are usually based on the hydrostatic assumption (e.g. POM, ROMS and COHERENS, among many others) although assuming both baroclinic and barotropic modes. Nevertheless the nearshore circulation near river mouths, especially where a strong plume is to be expected, highly convective and nonhydrostatic models shall be used (e.g. SELFE). Most of such models are still in a research stage.

As part of this Symposium, communications addressing the following topics will be particularly appreciated, though not exclusively:

  • Fully nonlinear models to describe the strongly nonlinear dynamics of waves propagating from deep waters, through intermediate waters, and final stages of shoaling and surf zones.
  • Numerical methods to discretize dispersive wave models, examples of which are the Boussinesq and Serre type equations, namely: finite element methods, finite difference discretization, and finite volume schemes.
  • Numerical wave models to deal with cohesive and non-cohesive sediment-transport and bed-level changes in estuaries and nearshore regions.
  • Numerical modelling of wave-structure interaction. Numerical models and applications.
  • Interaction of waves with floating bodies. Numerical models and applications.
  • Dispersive effects on tsunami waves.
  • Nearshore circulation modelling.
  • Estuarine circulation modelling.
  • Modelling of river plumes.

Organizer: Prof. Jiří Vala, Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Veveří 95, CZ‐602 00 Brno, Czech Republic

E-mail: vala.j@fce.vutbr.cz

The theoretical, numerical and computational analysis of dynamical systems and their  applications to the analysis of problems coming from civil, mechanical, electrical, etc. engineering and related subject fields, their formal verification and practical validation of relevant approaches constitute the unifying idea of this symposium, whose significance should be seen just in the confrontation of different approaches and intensification of multidisciplinary cooperation of experts (mathematicians, physicists, engineers, ...). Leaving nice model cases and seeing the real-world problems, we come to serious difficulties

a) in the formal analysis of existence, uniqueness, stability, etc. of solutions,

b) in the convergence of sequences of approximate solutions, as well as

c) in the design of sufficiently robust and inexpensive algorithms for direct, sensitivity and inverse problems.

The unification approaches addressed to the continuous and discrete analysis, namely to the study of integral, differential, difference, etc. equations from engineering practice, both deterministic and stochastic ones, including their formulation on time scales, is needed: the theoretical problems include e.g.

i) stability and observability of dynamical systems on time scales, their qualitative and quantitative analysis,

ii) filtration of inner states of such systems and

iii) identification of systems of orthogonal functions.

The scope of applications is not limited, but both theoretical and computational predictions of mechanical, thermal, etc. behaviour of advanced materials and structures and control of related technologies, up to the development of modelling and simulation software tools, are welcome.

Interdisciplinarity aims at obtaining the new by crossing boundaries between academic disciplines and thinking across them.

Computer-aided medical planning and simulation is a rapidly evolving research field that is going to alter dramatically the way practitioners perform their job. Mathematical models and computer simulations have a huge impact on modern medicine and engineering, in the treatment of diseases, in modeling engineering processes and prototypes and financial planning processes. For instance, a challenge lies in the modeling of the behavior of hard and soft tissue bringing together researchers from mathematics, medicine, economics, computer science and engineering. Another type of challenge could consist in data processing as subject to very general topics, including signal processing, field image or volume, with many applications in industry and medicine. Last but not least, modern medicine and state of the art engineering implies best "treatment" with cost-effective optimization.

It should be emphasized that it is not expected the mathematician to become a physician or an engineer but to acquire interdisciplinary concepts and gain the ability to use and value modern methods across domains.

Besides talks of mathematicians, doctors and engineers, the master students, PhD students, post-doc students or junior researchers will have the opportunity to present their works.

The fractional variational problems (FVPs) is a new interesting area in optimization problems. FVPs is a problem in which either the objective functional or the constraints, or both, contain at least one fractional derivative term. A FVPs can be defined with respect to different definitions of fractional derivatives but the most important types are Riemann-Liouville, Caputo and Rieaz-Caputo derivatives.  So far, many researchers have studied the fractional variational problems and discussed the different types of problems. To obtain the necessary optimality conditions for FVPs is a one of the topics that interested for researchers.

The development of knowledge following contemporary activities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) involves epistemologies and cognition frames associated with modelling processes that balance different elements from theory, experimentation and scientific computation. In addition, many such processes increasingly require advanced mathematical physics models and methods of scientific computation. It then follows that STEM educational curricula, methodologies and teaching-learning environments should envision the development of meaningful learning paths going through balanced interactive explorations of all the different phases of the modelling cycle, namely, qualitative contextual description, definition, exploration, interpretation and validation of mathematical models, communication of results and generalizations. Furthermore, and always taking into account specific area dependent contexts, it is fundamental to achieve an early balanced integration of computational modelling, and to bring up a strong integrated background in physics, mathematics and scientific computation. However, in spite of the increasing amount of scientific evidence accumulated over the years, the majority of current practices in STEM education courses are still not able to reflect such balanced STEM epistemological and cognitive characteristics. Moreover, these are courses that often have many students with fragmented knowledge states, deteriorating expectations and low exam success rates.

This Symposium is open to all interested in discussing contributions to improve on this situation. Focusing on secondary and introductory university levels we welcome theoretical, empirical or innovation development contributions distributed by all STEM areas and applications. Topics include but are not limited to:

94) Title: Sinc Methods in Honor of Frank Stenger's 80th birthday

Organizer: Prof. Dr. Gerd Baumann, Mathematics Department, German University in New Cairo City, New Cairo City, Egypt

E-mail: Gerd.Baumann@GUC.edu.eg

The symposium offers a platform for all kinds of Sinc approximations starting from approximations and interpolations of functions, definite and indefinite integrations of functions, representations of convolution integrals and their applications.

Approximation of initial and boundary value problems in one and multidimensional spaces includes the ability to do approximations on infinite intervals methods of quadrature, important approximations of the indefinite integral and novel methods for solving ordinary, partial differential equations as well as integral equations along with novel methods of Fourier and Laplace transform inversions and methods for solving Wiener-Hopf problems.

Our symposium also covers topics in Sinc approximation such as differentiation, Laplace transforms and its inverse, application of convolution integrals to fractional differential and integral equations as well as Sturm-Liouville problems for ordinary and fractional operators.

The extension of Sinc approximations for other basis functions like Legendre polynomials, wavelets or radial basis functions are new developments in the framework of Sinc methods.

Sinc methods are also efficient for solving polynomial equations to determine eigenvalues for a given matrix. We expect about 15-30 participants.

Experience of past earthquakes has demonstrated that many common buildings and typical methods of construction usually lack basic resistance against earthquake actions. The numerical and experimental assessment, as well as the mechanical modeling and design practice of existing and new structures when subjected to horizontal loads, is still an open topic and an intriguing issue, because of the complexity of the problem itself and because the research involves several disciplines, fields of expertise and approaches. Open challenges to tackle a consistent seismic design are more profoundly faced by developing countries, where the inadequacy and poor access to advanced technologies, resources, and knowledge lead to build new structures still vulnerable under horizontal loads. Conversely, open issues in industrialized countries like USA, EU, and Japan are still the mitigation of the seismic vulnerability of the existing/historical built stock, almost always constituted by non-ductile materials and conceived to withstand only vertical loads. The Special Session aims at comprehensively collecting papers dealing with the important issues related to the correct design of new structures and the vulnerability reduction of existing buildings in earthquake-prone areas.

Experimental and numerical works, as well as emblematic case studies and critical discussions on existing design approaches, are encouraged. The main target is to exchange ideas, disseminate works in progress and recent results on modelling, design, and experimentation in presence of seismic loads.
